 Medical eye care

Below are some of the conditions we frequently treat and manage at Edgewood Eye Center.

Dry Eye

Dry Eye is a chronic, progressive eye disorder with many treatment options. We passionately and aggressively treat dry eye here at Edgewood Eye Center. The majority of dry eye is caused by inflammation in the oil glands (Meibomian glands) of the eyelids.  This vicious cycle of inflammation disrupts  oil production, which leads to eventual oil gland damage/destruction.  We utilize a multi-treatment approach to truly restore oil gland function and improve your quality of life.  Call us to schedule your dry eye assessment today!

Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is the breakdown of the macula, which is the middle area of the retina responsible for your detailed center vision. Traditionally, it's a disease related to aging, but also has many lifestyle risk factors and can appear in younger individuals.  If any changes are ever detected during your exam, we will use advanced diagnostic equipment to analyze and manage accordingly. To lower your risks for macular degeneration, make sure you are eating dark leafy green vegetables, not smoking, and using sun protection while outside!

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a condition where changes in your eye pressure can physically damage your optic nerve and lead to permanent vision loss. Typically, you won't feel or notice the subtle vision loss until the damage is done and it's far too late. We check your eye pressure and look at your optic nerves during every yearly comprehensive exam and if there's suspicion to develop glaucoma, we would schedule you for further testing. Glaucoma testing includes: double checking your eye pressure with different instruments, assessing the thickness of the cornea, evaluating how open your drainage angles are, thickness of the optic nerves, and measuring any amount of vision loss with a visual field test. If glaucoma is suspected we would begin treatment and monitor for change over time.

Diabetic Retinopathy

The prevalence of Diabetes in America is increasing steadily each year, which creates the risk for diabetic eye disease. Diabetic eye disease is the number one cause of vision loss in working-aged adults worldwide. Having high blood sugar can affect the entire body, including every part of the eye, most commonly in the retina. Diabetes can cause retinal bleeds, some of which can be managed and others must be sent out for treatment. The best prevention of vision loss with diabetes is through lifestyle changes and overall health improvements. This can be achieved by working closely with your doctor to lower blood sugar of course and to get your eyes examined!

Pre/post op care

Here at Edgewood Eye Center we collaborate with other offices and coordinate care with all aspects of ocular surgeries. Let us take care of all of your pre/post-op needs including LASIK, cataract surgery, Oculoplastic surgery and much more!

Cataracts

Everyone in the world will get cataracts at some point in their lives if they live long enough. Cataracts are a natural part of aging as the lens of the eye becomes green/yellow and cloudy over time. As cataracts progress, your vision can become clouded and bright lights may appear to be bothersome with lots of glare. Once the cataracts become bothersome to the point of surgery, we will explain your options.  Living a healthy lifestyle of eating leafy green veggies, controlling your blood sugar, wearing sun protection, and not smoking can help lower the risk of cataract onset and progression!

Binocular Vision Disorders

Ideally, our two eyes want to work together as a team. Sometimes this isn't always the case and that's when we can have a binocular vision disorder. The symptoms of a poorly functioning binocular vision system can include headaches, short attention span, losing place while reading, tired eyes, double vision, intermittent blurring, and much more. Luckily, there are so many options available to improve how your eyes work together! Traditionally we start with discussing vision therapy options, anti-fatigue lenses, blue light filtering, visual hygiene (20/20/20 rule) and prism glasses. This is especially vital if you've ever been diagnosed with conditions like ADD and ADHD.  Allow us to make sure that your eyes are working together properly!

Everything else

If you don't see your reason for coming in today, don't worry! These are just some of the many eye related issues we see daily.
